How to play Gin Rummy

Gin Rummy is the classic two-player card game of melds. Each player gets ten cards. On your turn draw the top card of the stock or of the discard pile, then throw one card away. Group your cards into sets (three or four of a kind) and runs (three or more in a row of one suit, ace low). The cards that fit no meld are your deadwood: ace 1, face cards 10, the others their number.

When your deadwood is 10 or less you can knock. The other player lays off cards on your melds, and the lower deadwood scores the difference. Tie or lower and the other player has undercut you for a 25 point bonus. Go gin with no deadwood for 25 more, or big gin with all eleven cards melded for 31. Play to 50 or 100 points, with 25 for every hand won and a 100 point game bonus.

Play against a computer opponent on Easy, Normal or Hard, or share one device with a hand-over screen that hides the cards. A meld helper groups your cards and shows your deadwood (switch it off for the classic challenge), and a hint tells you the strongest move. Win hands to earn coins and unlock two more tables. Your coins, stats and settings are saved on your device.

FAQ

What counts as a meld?

A set is three or four cards of the same rank. A run is three or more cards in a row of one suit; the ace is low, so A-2-3 works but Q-K-A does not.

When can I knock?

After drawing, when the cards left over (deadwood) after your discard are worth 10 points or less. With no deadwood it is gin, and with all eleven cards melded it is big gin.

What is an undercut?

If the other player, after laying off cards on your melds, has the same deadwood as you or less, they score the difference plus 25 instead of you.

Can I play with a friend?

Yes. Choose 2 players on one device: a hand-over screen hides both hands between turns.

Is Gin Rummy free?

Yes. It is free to play in your browser, with no download and no account.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. It runs on phones, tablets and computers. Tap the stock or the discard pile to draw. Tap a card to select it, tap it again or press Discard to throw it. Press Knock when your deadwood is 10 or less.
