How to play Morris Nine

Morris Nine is the classic nine-piece mill game on a carved stone board of three nested squares. Each side places nine pieces, then slides them along the lines. Every row of three you close, a mill, lets you take an enemy piece that is not itself in a mill.

Play a bot at three strengths (Easy, Medium, Hard) or hand the screen to a friend for two players. Slide your pieces by tapping or dragging, get a hint or undo your last turn after a short video, and switch the optional flying rule on or off: with only three pieces left you may jump to any empty point.

You win when your rival is down to two pieces or cannot move; fifty slides without a take is a draw. Your record against each bot and your settings are saved on your device, so you can close the tab and come back later. The game runs in the browser with no download and no account.

FAQ

How do I win?

What is a mill?

Three of your pieces in a straight line along a side of a square or along one of the four spokes. Closing one lets you take an enemy piece.

Which pieces can I take?

Any enemy piece that is not inside a mill. If every enemy piece is in a mill, you may take any of them.

What is the flying rule?

An optional rule, on by default: a player with exactly three pieces left may jump to any empty point. Switch it off in the menu for a stricter endgame.

Is Morris Nine free?
