How to play Tunnel Digger

Tunnel Digger is an arcade game under the grass. You are a little mole in a hard hat. Dig through the soil with the arrow keys or the on-screen pad, and every tile you dig opens a new tunnel. Somewhere below, round red grubs and green flame-breathing lizards wait in their own burrows.

Face a monster and hold the pump: the hose sticks to it and every puff swells it up, until it pops. Let go too early and it slowly deflates, so keep pumping. Or be clever and dig out the soil under a boulder so it drops on a whole row of monsters at once. Deeper layers of soil score more, and a boulder that crushes several monsters pays a big bonus.

Watch out: monsters turn into drifting ghost eyes when they are cut off, pass straight through the soil and take solid shape again in the nearest tunnel. The last monster on a level panics and runs for the surface, so catch it first. Flame lizards warn you before they breathe fire three tiles along the tunnel.

Every level adds monsters, speed and boulders. Collect the gem that appears after two boulders have landed, earn extra lives, and spend coins on a longer hose, a stronger grip and quicker boots. Checkpoints let you start later runs from deeper levels.

Controls

Arrow keys or WASD: dig and move. Space or Z (hold): pump air into a monster in front of you. P or Esc: pause. M: sound on or off.

Use the arrow pad to dig and move, hold the big PUMP button to inflate the monster in front of you. Dragging on the field also steers.

FAQ

How do I beat a monster?

Face it in a straight open tunnel and hold the pump. The hose sticks and each puff swells it until it pops. You can also dig out the soil under a boulder so it falls on the monster.

What are the ghost eyes?

A monster cut off from you turns into a pair of drifting eyes that pass through soil. Ghosts cannot hurt you and cannot be pumped, but they become solid again in the first tunnel they reach.

Why does the last monster run away?

When only one is left it panics and heads for the surface. Pump it before it gets there; if it escapes the level still ends, but you lose its points.

What are coins for?

Every run pays coins by score and depth. Spend them on a longer hose, a stronger grip that slows deflating, and quicker boots. An optional video doubles the coins or gives one extra life.

Is Tunnel Digger free?

Yes. It is free to play in your browser, with no download and no account.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. It runs on phones, tablets and computers. Use the arrow pad to dig and move, hold the big PUMP button to inflate the monster in front of you. Dragging on the field also steers.
